For some reason fedora isn’t able to display Windows computers or even ping windows computers by name with a default install. To fix this you first need a WINS server, or in this case, to make sure you’ve SAMBA server installed:
yum install samba samba-client samba-common
The last thing you’ve to do to solve the ping by windows name is to edit /etc/nsswitch.conf and change the line that reads “hosts: files dns” to “hosts: files dns wins”.
Ohh and don’t forget to enable nmb and smb to start automatically if that’s what you need 😉
Thats it
